When you are working out with pads, you are not limited in any way, so they are handy for all combinations. There are different types of workouts when you are working out with pads. First one is using “planned” combinations. This means that you or your trainer will set up different punch combinations and you will perform it in the correct order. For example a combination made out of four different punches – L-Jab, L-Jab, R-Cross, L-Hook. Your partner will hold the pads in the corect position and you will be able to hit the pads correctly. You can also do several “planned combo’s” and all of them are numbered. Your partner will hold the pads and call the combo number. For example if your partner shouts combo 1 you will preform JAB, JAB, HOOK, and if he calls combo 2 you will perform JAB, CROSS, UPPERCUT, and so on and so forth. But you have to be carefull and both of you must know all the combinations. Another way to train is that your partner or coach calls out a combo punch sequence. He can shout JAB, JAB, CROSS, HOOK, and you will perform these punches. All these exercises can be done with or without movement, so you can either do it standing in a corner or moving around the ring. You should understand that if you move around it is more advanced and not recomended for beginers, but you do practise your movement.
Freestyle is another way to train. This means that your partner just holds the pads up and you do your punches the way you feel. This exercise is great for evolving creativity and reaction time in a fighter because you need to watch the pads and react the way it is needed, you have to chose the correct punch or punches on the position of the pads.
Pad work is a “team” effort. So you can not do this by your self. Both of the trainees have to konw how to hold the pads for different punches and the right implementation of the punches. The position for the hook is different from a jab or the uppercut so both of you must be realy carefull and know your basics.
